The Atlanta Braves started off hot early on Tuesday night and that early start wound up being more than enough to take down the Houston Astros in game one of the World Series by the score of 6-2
How It Happened
The Braves wasted very little time getting on the board with leadoff hitter Jorge Soler lifting one to the Crawford Boxes on a 2-0 pitch to take the early lead. Austin Riley made it 2-0 later in the inning with a one-out double to center field.
The Astros tried to respond in the bottom frame, loading the bases after a pair of two-out walks. However, Kyle Tucker left the bases loaded with a groundout to Ozzie Albies.
Atlanta got a little more insurance in the second, once again from Soler who hit a fielder’s choice to Carlos Correa and that scored Travis d’Arnaud. The Braves busted things wide open in the top of the third with a two-run home run out to left field, making it a 5-0 lead.
However, things weren’t all great for Atlanta, as Charlie Morton exited the contest early in the bottom of the third due to a right fibula fracture, which will take him out of the rest of the series. The Astros finally got on the board after Chas McCormick hit one to Dansby Swanson that bounced off of his hand and that allowed Tucker to reach home safely,
It wasn’t until the eighth inning that either team put up another run with Swanson scoring off of a sac fly. The Astros tried to get something going in the eighth after Carlos Correa got Yordan Alvarez home safely on a groundout, but the attempt at a rally was snuffed out after Yuli Gurriel was tagged out at second to end the inning.
Big Number: 1
The Astros had a rough night at the plate, especially with runners in scoring position, going one-of-nine with runners on base. After what we saw the last couple of games in the ALCS, it was pretty disappointing to see.
Player of the Game: Jorge Soler
The Braves designated hitter made history with his performance, becoming the first to ever hit a leadoff home run in game one of the World Series. You add another RBI in the second inning, that gives him the honors for the best player from game one.
