The Houston Astros defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. The win came after Houston secured an 18-1 win on Friday and a 6-5 win on Saturday, sweeping the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Dodgers (56-35) went with Emmet Sheehan on the mound. The 25-year old right-hander worked an effective first, giving up a couple of singles but getting out of the jam with no damage done.

The Astros (55-35) countered with Ryan Gusto. Gusto also gave up a single, but just like Sheehan did not let it come around to score. That kept this game 0-0 after one full inning.

The LA offense would strike first in this one. With two outs in the second inning, Dalton Rushing delivered an RBI double to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team.

Gusto settled in and the Astros offense answered. Jose Altuve got the scoring going for Houston in the third, bringing home a run on a sacrifice fly.

The score would stay 1-1 until the sixth, when Houston took their first lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, Zack Short worked a patient walk to bring home a run and give Houston the lead. That’s all they would get, but it made it 2-1.

Gusto gave Houston a great outing, going six strong innings with just the one run allowed. He only struck out one batter, but his efficiency allowed the Astros to maintain their lead.

Insurance would arrive in the top of the eighth, as Houston hit back-to-back homers. Christian Walker and Yainer Diaz both went yard to make it 4-1. Just one frame later, Altuve added one more run with a solo shot of his own.

Bryan Abreu was able to nail things down in the ninth for Houston, securing another win.

BIG NUMBER: 3

Three is the number of solo home runs the Astros used in this game. Additionally, it is the number of wins they got in Dodger Stadium over the weekend, completing the sweep.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ryan Gusto

The season of unlikely heroes continues for Houston. Gusto faced the talented Dodger lineup and kept them at bay all afternoon.

UP NEXT: The Astros return home to Daikin Park tomorrow, where they will face the Cleveland Guardians at 7:10 PM. You can listen to the action on ESPN 103.7 Lafayette 104.1 Lake Charles.
