The Houston Astros defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 9-1 on Wednesday afternoon inside American Family Field. The win finishes a six-game road trip in which the Astros went 2-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Brewers (19-19) went with right-hander Quinn Priester. Priester navigated the first inning without issue, posting an early zero for the Brewers at home.
The Astros (18-18) countered with lefty Framber Valdez on the mound. He also managed the first frsame well. That left the game tied 0-0 after one full inning.
The Astros’ offense got to Priester with two outs in the second. With Jake Meyers on first, he was moving with the pitch. Zach Dezenzo delivered an RBI double into the corner to give Houston a 1-0 lead.
In the top half of the fifth, the Astros added a couple more runs. The first came after an overturned call at the plate on a fielder’s choice. The second was added via a passed ball. That made it 3-0.
Eric Haase got the Brewers on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo home run. That was the lone run Valdez would give up. He was very effective over seven innings of work.
Jeremy Pena added three more runs for Houston on a three-run homer, making the score 6-1. That was before the Astros added another trifecta of runs in the top half of the ninth. Yainer Diaz drove in two of those, with Isaac Paredes getting the other. That was plenty for the Astros, who would hold on to win 9-1.
BIG NUMBER: 9
After scoring just four runs over the first two games of this series, Houston more than doubled that on Wednesday. The nine-run outburst was the most for the Astros in a game since back on April 11.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Framber Valdez
Valdez has been inconsistent this season, but the Astros need more of the version they got on Wednesday. Seven innings, one run allowed, and seven strikeouts is more than enough.
UP NEXT: The Astros will be off tomorrow before returning home to host the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night at 7:10 PM. The game can be heard on Newstalk 98.5 FM.
