The Houston Astros have signed their 2024 first-round pick Walker Janek to a contract.
The organization made that announcement on Friday, as the team returned to begin a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Janek is a native of the Lone Star state, originally from Portland, Texas. He played collegiately at Sam Houston State, where he was a standout catcher. He won the Buster Posey Award as the nation’s top catcher.
For his collegiate career, he hit 37 home runs and drove in 156 runs. His senior season may have been his best, as he put up a .368 average with 17 home runs.
The Astros made 19 selections in the first-year player draft, and they have until August 1st to sign them to contracts. The draft picks are as follows:
