The Houston Astros added more infield depth.
Multiple media reports state that the Astros agreed to a Minor League deal with veteran second baseman Brendan Rodgers, including an invitation to Spring Training.
Rodgers has spent his entire Major League Baseball career with the Colorado Rockies, who drafted him out of high school with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Amateur Draft. He was picked behind Dansby Swanson and Alex Bregman, the former Astros third baseman who signed with the Boston Red Sox last week.
In six seasons, the 28-year-old has appeared in 452 games and hit .266 with 45 homers and 197 RBIs. He has played most of his games at second base, but he played 36 games in his career at shortstop in addition to 411 games at second base.
Rodgers is coming off a season in which he played in 135 games and hit .267 with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs.
Rodgers won the National League Gold Glove at second base in 2022.
Rodgers gives the Astros another veteran player to start at second base in place of Jose Altuve, who is earning time this spring playing in left field. Houston also signed former New York Mets infielder Luis Guillorme to a Minor League deal last week, and utility player Mauricio Dubón can also play second base.
The Astros will be conducting Spring Training at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida.
