The Houston Astros added a third player before the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline expired on Thursday evening.
After adding Baltimore Orioles third baseman Ramón Urías on Wednesday, the Twins traded for former Astros star Carlos Correa on Thursday. Astros General Manager Dana Brown wasn’t done as the team traded for Miami Marlins outfielder Jesús Sánchez.
Sánchez was acquired from the Marlins in exchange for pitcher Ryan Gusto, minor league infielder Chase Jaworsky, and minor league outfielder Esmil Valencia.
Sánchez has hit .256 with 12 doubles, four triples, 10 home runs, 36 RBI, and a .740 OPS in 86 games with the Marlins this season. The 27-year-old has played in parts of his six MLB seasons (2020-25), all with Miami.
Sánchez has appeared in 532 Major League games, while posting a .243 career average and a .736 career OPS. He also has experience at all three outfield positions, making starts in right field (298), center field (88), and left field (45).
The left-handed hitter is a native of Higuey, Dominican Republic, and was signed as an international free agent by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014. Sánchez made his way up through the Rays’ farm system before being traded to the Marlins in 2019.
Gusto has gone 7-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 24 appearances (14 starts) for the Astros this season. He has also recorded 87 strikeouts and a 1.43 WHIP. Gusto was originally an 11th-round pick out of Broward College by the Astros in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Jaworsky, 23, has spent his entire season at High A Asheville, recording a .242 batting average with 10 doubles, three home runs, 29 RBI, and .712 OPS in 57 games. He was the Astros’ fifth-round pick out of Rock Canyon High School in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Valencia, 19, has spent his entire season at Single A Fayetteville, recording a .263 batting average with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 36 RBI, and a .682 OPS in 83 games. He was originally signed by the Astros as an undrafted free agent in 2023 from the Dominican Republic.
