The Houston Astros made their first big move of the 2024 off-season, trading outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs for infielders Isaac Paredes, and Cam Smith, and right-handed pitcher Hayden Wesneski.
Tucker, a three-time All-Star and two-time World Champion with the Astros, has been an everyday starter for Houston since 2021 in right field. Dynamic as a hitter and a stalwart defender, Tucker notched both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger during his time in H-Town and will be a massive upgrade for the Cubs.
Paredes, a 25-year-old infielder, comes to Houston after spending time in Tampa and Chicago. A pull hitter, Paredes had 19 homers with 80 RBI in 2024 and will look to establish himself as a key contributor in the Astros lineup as the likely replacement for Alex Bregman.
Smith, a top prospect in the 2024 MLB Draft, becomes the Astros’ top prospect in the system with the ability to play both corner infield spots. He’ll need more time in the minors, but Smith could be the long-term answer at first base for Joe Espada.
Wesneski finished 2024 with a 3-6 record and a 3.86 ERA in 28 appearances. The Houston native has spent three seasons in the big leagues and will look to provide pitching depth to his hometown team.
