BREAKING: Gerry Glasco named Texas Tech head coach

Posted by mattmiguez on June 20, 2024 in Blogs, Featured, Latest News, Local News, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, Miguez's Blog, Sports News, What's Hot, What's New

Louisiana Ragin Cajuns softball coach Gerry Glasco has taken the same position at Texas Tech in the Big 12, it was announced Thursday morning.

It was reported Wednesday evening that Glasco had been offered the job and had until noon today to make a decision, but the news was confirmed this morning first by Kevin Foote of the Acadiana Advocate. Shellie Landry, who played for the Cajuns and served as an assistant in 2024, will be the acting director of the program.

“I want to personally thank Gerry Glasco for his leadership during the past seven years as he and his staff maintained a winning culture within our Softball program,” Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Bryan Maggard said. “We wish Gerry and his wife, Vickie, the very best with their future endeavors at Texas Tech University.”

Glasco spent seven seasons at the helm of the Louisiana softball program, winning 40+ games each season, appearing in the NCAA Tournament in each season, hosting one Regional, and playing in one Super Regional. His overall record in Lafayette sits at 300-88 with five regular season Sun Belt Championships and four SBC Tournament titles.

“I am excited, thrilled and humbled to guide the Texas Tech softball program,” said Glasco. “With the guidance of the outstanding administration under Kirby Hocutt, I look forward to helping Tech Softball become one of the best programs in the nation. We will build a culture of competition and excellence in everything that we do both on and off the field.”

The Cajuns softball program will now look for just their third head coach since the turn of the century. Louisiana also signed Glasco to a contract extension through the 2028 season, so the buyout number from Texas Tech will likely be pretty large.

This news of a coaching change also opens the transfer portal for 30 days for Cajuns players.
