Two members of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns baseball team were honored by the Sun Belt Conference as catcher Julian Brock and shortstop Kyle DeBarge were each named to the All-Sun Belt team.
Both players were named to the second team by the league’s head coaches, giving Louisiana multiple selections for the 10th consecutive year.
Brock, who was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List earlier this season, had a career year at the plate, setting bests in average (.328), home runs (11) and RBI (59) while starting 54 of the 56 games for Louisiana. The junior is also among the conference leaders in average, slugging percentage (.606), on-base percentage (.450), RBI, doubles (15), and sacrifice flies (6).
The Fulshear, Texas native was third on the team with 17 multi-hit games and led the team in multi-RBI games with 16. Brock, who was named the SBC Hitter of the Week, had three of the team’s five grand slams on the season and had four games with four-or-more runs batted in.
DeBarge, who has been the anchor on the top fielding team in the league, finished as the team leader in hitting with a .357 batting average. He was third on the team in slugging (.532) and second in on-base percentage (.437).
The Kinder native finished fifth on the team in RBI with 32 despite having to sit 13 games with a hand injury. DeBarge hit safely in 16 of the final 18 games after returning to the lineup. He finished second on the team in multi-hit games (19) and only committed one error during 22 SBC contests.
Louisiana, the fourth seed in the tournament, will begin the defense of its Sun Belt tournament championship Wednesday night when they play fifth-seeded Texas State at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. The first pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
