LAFAYETTE — The Lousiana-Lafayette baseball team wanted to add some experience and depth to its infield, and it feels as if it accomplished that with the recent signing of junior college infielders Brad Antchak and Alex Pinero.
“They’re older guys, so they’ll bring in a little age and maturity to go along with the guys we have returning,” Babineaux said. “We just felt we needed to get a little more losing Blake, that’s a lot of experience at the shortstop position.”
They both fit the Cajuns preferred prototype: they’re physical and athletic players who are capable of hitting the ball out of the park and playing multiple defensive positions.
“Both of them are physical-type players,” Babineaux said. “Both of them are good-bodied kids that have some size to them and they’ll definitely provide some pop to our lineup. We’re losing a lot of home runs from this season.”
“(Antchak) can definitely come in and stay at the shortstop position,” Babineaux said. “It’s going to have to be won, obviously, because we have some very viable candidates. … He’s a guy that potentially not only play shortstop but hit in the meat of the order for us.”
Pinero, whom Babineaux said is 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3, held his own at the plate as well for Pensacola State College last season, batting .327 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 45 games. But Babineaux liked the way he looked at the hot corner.
“Pinero is very skilled defensively,” Babineaux said. “Very smooth with his hands and his feet, they work well together and he’s got a good arm across the diamond.”
