To paraphrase the often misquoted quote, ‘When it comes to Cajuns football, maybe winning is the only thing’.
Just because I want the Cajuns to be more explosive and creative on offense doesn’t mean they can. Just because a basketball game broke out between Oklahoma & Texas Tech doesn’t mean the Cajuns have to be involved. Just because Syracuse has a Top 5 passer and Top 2 receiver in the nation doesn’t mean the Cajuns have to.
Forget that every other D1 school had scored at least five touchdowns against the Bobcats defense. The bottom line is none of that matters. The only thing that matters is the Cajuns beat Texas State 27-3 Saturday night in San Marcos for their first win in over a month. It was a must win if they intend to go ‘bowling’ this December.
To paraphrase a local legendary coach, ‘Cajuns football-It is what it is’. They continue to improve defensively. Much more (or least quicker) vs Texas State compared to the Appalachian State. After the Texas State opening drive of 63 yards resulted in a field goal, the Cajuns limited the Bobcats to only 158 yards (zero points) for the rest of the game.
On the other side of the ball, the offense is methodical at best. Four of their five scoring drives vs Texas State took 9, 11, 10 and 8 plays. The fifth and final scoring drive midway thru the 4th quarter took only five. Consistency has been a serious issue throughout the season. Only three times during the entire season (OT not withstanding), have the Cajuns scored on back to back possessions.
But what can you do? Not much is going to change seven games into the season. Although there appeared to be more outside runs for Eli McGuire against Texas State then in previous games. The reason Coach Hudspeth stresses getting turnovers, he knows all to well, the Cajuns offense is limited. Therefore, they need to steal a possession or two to win.
Cajuns enjoy a off-week to get ready for Idaho on November 5th. It’s another must win to get a post-season birth. While Idaho surrenders almost 36 points per game, all that matters is the Cajuns have one more than the Vandals.
