Welcome everyone to the latest edition of the Ragin Cajuns preview where I break down every Cajuns game on the schedule! This week’s it’s the Cajuns matchup against Texas State.
Last Week: The last time the Cajuns played the offense was virtually nonexistent in a midweek matchup against Appalachian State as they were shutout 24-0. Texas State had a hard fought matchup against UL Monroe but it was in a losing effort by the score of 40-34.
Last Meeting: The last time these two teams faced off it was a win for the Ragin Cajuns and in convincing fashion with the Cajuns scoring 49 points on the night. The Cajuns hold a 3-0 lead in the series between the two.
What to Watch For:
Is It Time For Jordan Davis? Over the last few games, Anthony Jennings has regressed. After a pair of poor outings against Tulane and New Mexico State, it’s beginning to look more and more likely that Jordan Davis, the guy that looked like the starting QB before Jennings transferred will be taking over in the shotgun position. Is it the right decision? We’ll see if it’s actually done, but the Cajuns are missing that spark that they had a few weeks ago against South Alabama and maybe it will be that spark and move in that right direction.
Expect a Shootout in San Marcos: Speaking of a spark, the Cajuns will need to get that spark going against a team that has had most of their games be high scoring affairs in Texas State. Their QB Tyler Jones had a rough outing last week against UL Monroe with a couple picks, but he’s been a man on fire with half of his games going over 300 yards. If the Cajuns want to win this game on Saturday then the offense needs to wake up out of its slumber.
Cajuns Getting Back to Full Strength: It looks like the Cajuns will be getting back a few guys from either injury or otherwise. Most notably will be Savion Brown and that might give the defense some improvement because that secondary as of late hasn’t looked too good. The Bobcats might need to watch out for the senior with how much problems he could cause on the defensive side of the ball because they do have the tendency to give the ball away.
The Cajuns Will Win If:
If the Cajuns can hold Texas State to less than three touchdowns, they could start to turn things around. The Cajuns aren’t the best defensive team, but if the Bobcats aren’t having quick drives that turn into seven points the game is in the Cajuns hands.
Texas State Will Win If:
The Bobcats can get their first win ever over the Cajuns if the passing game can work. Again, they are a very pass-happy team and this secondary has been shown to crack under pressure in this aspect of the game. With a quarterback like Jones, the Cajuns might be having a hard time with him and if that happens the Cajuns season will continue to turn sour.
