New Orleans Saints fans can now breathe easy as Drew Brees has agreed to a new deal with the franchise.
The longtime quarterback is set to sign a two-year deal worth $50 million, $27 million of which is guaranteed. According to Adam Schefter though, it is actually a one-year deal with a team option after the first year. If the Saints weren’t able to strike a new deal by the 4 pm deadline, they would have incurred $18 million in dead money to the salary cap.
Brees is coming off of his 12th straight season of throwing for 4.000 yards or more and was helped last season by a renewed focus on the run game thanks to offensive rookie of the year Alvin Kamara. Barring injury, the 39-year old quarterback will become the NFL’s all-time leader for passing yards as he’s only 1,495 yards behind Peyton Manning’s standard.
