The first inning for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns was certainly one to forget, but it wound up being a big reason why they fell in the Conference Championship to Texas State 5-2.
How It Happened
Texas State struck early and often in the first with three straight singles to start the ballgame loaded the bases early. Brianna Sannem reached home safely off of a fielder’s choice by Taylor Oltmann. The Bobcats made it 2-0 later in the inning when Bailee Carter scored off of a throwing error by Summer Ellyson.
The Cajuns responded in the bottom of the second with a two-run double out to right center by Casidy Chaumont to even things up. However, Texas State took the lead back in the fifth with Christiana McDowell scoring off a fielding error by Alissa Dalton.
The door was slammed shut in the sixth with a Haleigh Davis hitting a two-run shot out to left field to make it a 5-2 ballgame and end Summer Ellyson’s afternoon.
Ellyson dropped to 21-8 on the season allowing five runs, three of which were earned. She also struck out two and allowed seven hits in five and a third innings of work.
Big Number: 2
The two errors that the Cajuns committed on Saturday were more than enough to help the Bobcats secure a Sun Belt Conference championship in softball.
Player of the Game: Randi Rupp
Randi Rupp, who threw 349 pitches over the course of the tournament had a solid outing allowing only two runs off of seven hits, walked one, and struck out three on the afternoon.
