Former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun point guard and current New Orleans Pelican Elfrid Payton will be inducted into the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches announced on Tuesday. The association consists of college basketball head coaches within Louisiana.

Originally from New Orleans, Payton was a standout at John Ehret High School. He would go on to play for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns under coach Bob Marlin. In his Louisiana career, he scored nearly 1500 points and helped the Cajuns make an NCAA Tournament appearance.

He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers 10th overall and was traded to the Orlando Magic on that same night. He has played in nine NBA seasons, totaling over 5000 points and nearly 3000 assists.

This year, he has played for his hometown New Orleans Pelicans, and is expected to finish the season with them.

He will be inducted on Saturday, May 3rd in Baton Rouge at the 51st Annual Awards Banquet for the LABC.
