Grading the Series: Louisiana Ragin Cajuns vs Arkansas State

Posted by clintdomingue on April 1, 2018 in Blogs, Latest News

It was another rough weekend for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, losing two of three against Arkansas State. It’s yet another tough series loss for the Cajuns, so let’s grade out their performance over the weekend.

Offense: C

Louisiana’s offense was just okay. Racking up 15 runs over the series in Jonesboro should have given the Cajuns the series if not for the bullpen falling apart (we’ll get to that). Over the weekend, the Cajuns batted .239 (26/109) over the weekend and that’s another step in the right direction when you consider how the Cajuns offense underperformed in the first month of the season.

Infield Defense: D-

Another weekend where errors wound up costing the Cajuns in a big way with three of the four errors being committed by the infield (this includes Grant Cox’s error in the 12th on Thursday). That alone brought the grade way down. Some of those big innings the Red Wolves had on Friday was because of the miscues on defense.

Outfield Defense: D+

The outfield was able to take care of business for the most part outside of one error in the sixth that led to yet another run in a 14-2 loss. If it was an error that lead to no runs on the board might’ve pushed the grade up to a C.

Weekend Rotation: C

You know how when you were in school and a teacher would occasionally grade on a curve when it came to exams? That’s kind of how this grade came about because of Colten Schmidt’s complete game performance. If not for that, odds are this grade would have dropped down to a D-. Nick Lee allowing eight total runs (six earned) hurt the Cajuns on Friday. Jack Burk’s game on Thursday wasn’t bad by any means, in fact it was a solid game from the sophomore but it wasn’t quite enough to make the grade any higher than a C.

Bullpen: D

The bullpen’s grade leans heavily on what happened on Thursday night. After Jack Burk’s day was done, things turned for the worse and led to an extra innings loss with five runs (four earned) being scored after the seventh inning. In fact the only solid bullpen guy this weekend was Dylan Moore with 2 and a third, allowing three hits, struck out five and walking two.

Overall: D+
