The motto for the Houston Astros all season has been “Take It Back”. The month of July ended on a high note with the trade for Zack Greinke on Wednesday, but it was still a great month for the Astros and they were honored for their efforts.
Houston swept the monthly awards in July with Yuli Gurriel named as player of the month, Gerrit Cole was named Pitcher of the Month for the second straight month, and Yordan Alvarez named Rookie of the Month for the second straight month.
Gurriel hit .398 for the month of July with 12 home runs and a 1.264 OPS. Gerrit Cole meanwhile was lights out on the mound with a 4-0 record and a 1.85 ERA and also racked up 51 strikeouts in the last month.
The rookie Alvarez hit .333 with five dingers and a 1.045 OPS in July.
This is the first time in franchise history that the Astros have swept the monthly awards.
