Louisiana Holds Off UL Monroe’s Late Rally

A stellar performance from Gabriella Cortez wasn’t enough for UL Monroe (4-12, 1-3 Sun Belt) as the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (9-8, 4-1 Sun Belt) came away with a 63-55 win on Saturday night thanks to a balanced attack on offense.
It wasn’t easy though as they went two-of-eight from the field before the media timeout. They were able to get things going afterwards and got out to a 14-11 after the first quarter.
The Cajuns were able to build a lead thanks in large part to back-to-back treys from Nekia Jones. They also put together a 9-2 run and that was enough to net them a 32-23 lead at the half.
UL Monroe came out of the gates strong in the second half and chipped away at the Cajuns lead. However, they weren’t able to get out in front and were down by four headed into the final quarter.
Cortez tried to put the team on her back, but it was too little too late with Malachi Williams putting an end to the Warhawks chances with a layup with 2:15 left in the ballgame to make it 61-51.
The Cajuns will hit the road on Thursday when they take on UT-Arlington (8-9, 2-4 Sun Belt) with tipoff set for 5 pm.
