After a rough ending to the first Sun Belt Conference series, the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (9-11, 1-2 Sun Belt) were able to get the bats going a little more consistently and that continued on Wednesday night with a 5-2 win (8-12, 5-1 Southland).
Key to Victory: Strong Start
One of the negatives for the Cajuns early on in the season was that it took some time for them to really get going offensively. They wasted no time getting runs on the board, getting two runs across in the first and second innings. Having that kind of start paired with a solid outing from Austin Perrin set this team up for success over the Cowboys.
Player of the Game: Austin Perrin
Perrin’s first win for the Ragin Cajuns was a big one against in-state opponent McNeese State, allowing only two runs off of five hits in five and two-thirds of an inning of work. While those numbers don’t inspire a lot of confidence with another big midweek matchup next Tuesday against LSU, it’s still a positive for him to get that first win on the board as a freshman.
Big Number: 10
While the Cajuns had a solid ballgame offensively with five runs off of eight hits, they struck out a little too much on Wednesday with 10 Ks, with three of them being by Kennon Fontenot. The left-fielder had been one of the more consistent hitters, batting .209 this season, but he’s starting to fall behind and will look to bounce back this weekend.
Next Up: Troy Homestand
After being on the road the last four games, the Cajuns will be taking on the Troy Trojans (14-7, 1-2 Sun Belt) in a three-game set with first pitch for game one set for 6:00 pm.
