Louisiana Ragin Cajuns Split Final Day of Mardi Gras Invitational

The final day of the Mardi Gras Invitational for the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (11-4) didn’t exactly go the way they wanted to as they split their final two matchups on Sunday afternoon.

In the first game, neither team could really get anything going up until the sixth inning when Kelli Martinez hit an RBI single to left field that would score DJ Sanders safely.

The Braves of Bradley (9-6) though responded in the bottom of the sixth with a two run shot to left field from Maria Schroeder and that was what vaulted them over the Cajuns.

Alex Stewart dropped to 4-2 on the year allowing two runs off of five hits, walked one, and struck out two in six innings of work.

In the second game it was all Cajuns throughout with eight runs coming in the second inning, capped off by a three-run blast by DJ Sanders.

Beth Ashley would score thanks to a fielding error by Mississippi Valley’s (1-10) centerfielder to increase their lead.

The onslaught would continue in the fourth inning with DJ Sanders starting things off with a two-run home run down the right field line. Kassidy Zeringue got two more runs across later in the inning with a two-run triple down the left field line.

The final nail would be put in the coffin in the fifth inning when Abby Sterling sent one flying to left center field for two more runs.

Macey Smith improved to 2-1 on the season with two shutout innings, walking one, and striking out one batter.

The Cajuns will host the Ragin Cajuns Invitational starting on Friday with a matchup against Alcorn State (3-7) with first pitch set for 4 pm.
