Louisiana Women’s Hoops Survive Triple Overtime Thriller

McNeese State (3-4) wasn’t about to go away easily on Sunday afternoon in the Cajundome. After being down 10 points against the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns (3-5) with 3:51 remaining, they managed to tie things up after Dede Sheppard made a layup with 47 seconds left in regulation.

It seemed that the Cajuns were poised to end the ballgame after one overtime period after going on a 7-0 run during the final three minutes, but a pair of free throws from Carswell and another layup from Sheppard with 13 seconds left sent it to double overtime. This was the first time since 2015 that the Cajuns were involved in a double overtime matchup.

The Cajuns got hot early in the second overtime frame, going on a 10-0 run thanks to Nekia Jones. However, the Cowboys slid right back into the ballgame when Sheppard was fouled behind the three point line with two seconds left and nailed all three of her free throws to force triple overtime.

The third overtime frame definitely wasn’t the charm though as the Cajuns went on a 12-2 in the final 2:54 to come away with a 98-86 victory.

The Cajuns will return to action on December 8th when they host the Auburn Tigers (5-3) with tipoff set for 7 pm.
