The Sunday matchup against LSU (7-1) and Maryland (1-5) didn’t start out the way many fans expected it to. At the end of the day though, the Tigers were able to come away with a 9-5 win and a sweep over the Terrapins.
Zach Jancarsky started things off for Maryland with a solo shot in the top of the first to take an early lead. They weren’t done though as later in the inning Will Watson got one just in the outfield bleachers of Alex Box to score two more runs.
LSU would get on the board in the bottom of the second with a pair of RBI doubles from Rankin Woley and Josh Smith to cut away at the lead.
The Tigers continued to roll in the bottom of the third highlighted by a two-run single from Michael Papierski. The final nail would be put in by Greg Deichmann who hit his fourth home run of the season to make it 9-3.
A pair of RBI singles by the Terrapins in the top of the seventh cut the lead to four runs, but it was a case of too little too late.
Caleb Gilbert was credited with his first win of the season, striking out all six of the batters he faced in two innings of relief work. Hunter Newman was credited with the save with 1 1/3 innings of work, striking out one and walking one.
The Tigers will return to action when they host Nicholls (4-3) with first pitch set for 6:30 pm.
