New Iberia product ready to lead the Cajuns

Louisiana has developed a process of recruiting homegrown talent and turning them into NFL prospects.

Trey Amos could very well be on his way there.

Amos, once a dual-threat quarterback at Catholic-New Iberia, has made the transition to the defensive side of the ball. Having never played defense before, this transition was not an easy one.

The biggest thing he’s learned? Trusting in the process.

“I would say just trusting the process of going from quarterback to defensive back immediately,” said Amos, who is preparing for his sophomore season with Louisiana. “I never really worked on DB until I got to college, and Coach (Lamar) Morgan was tough on me.”

Morgan, once the cornerbacks’ coach and now the defensive coordinator, returned to Lafayette in 2022 following a stint at Vanderbilt ready to make an impact at his alma mater. Morgan said that Amos has “untapped potential” in this secondary.

Stats-wise, Amos has struggled to make an impact in his first two seasons in Cajun country, but that’s to be expected with such a drastic transition in position change. The multi-sport athlete in high school rushed for nearly 3,000 total yards between his junior and senior seasons in New Iberia, leading the Panthers to a state title game and a semifinal appearance in those two years.

One of the biggest attributes in Amos’ arsenal is being versatile and a team player.

“I’ve always been a team player. So whatever role the team needs from me, I’ll do the most I can for this team” Amos said. “Whether it’s cornerback or elsewhere, I’ll be there.”

Amos and the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns will defend their Sun Belt Championship as well as their nation’s longest active win streak when they open the 2022 season against Southeastern Louisiana at Cajun Field on September 3rd. The kickoff time for the season opener is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
