Opening weekend for LSU (1-2) was a rough one to say the very least. After getting beaten by Notre Dame (2-1) on Saturday 10-5, the Fighting Irish put the boots to them on Sunday with a big finish in the ninth to win the series 11-3.
The Tigers got on the board first thanks to a Josh Smith sac fly in the bottom of the third that got Bryce Jordan across home plate. However, Notre Dame responded in the fourth with Eric Gilgenbach hitting a three-run blast out to right center to give them a 3-1 lead.
The Irish began to build a gap between themselves and the Tigers with a three-run sixth highlighted by a two-run single from Spencer Myers. Beau Jordan tried to get LSU back in the ballgame in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot out to left field, but Gilgenbach put the game out of reach with a grand slam that broke a part of the scoreboard.
LSU will return to action on Wednesday when they take on the UNO Privateers (1-1) with first pitch set for 6:30 pm.
