The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, behind a trio of double-digit performances, walked out of Fant-Ewing with their 12th straight win over the UL Monroe Warhawks in convincing fashion, winning 62-49.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cajuns wasted zero time getting out in front, going on a 10-0 run to start the contest and took that into the first media timeout. After the timeout, the Warhawks fought back and managed to end the first quarter with an 11-2 run, knotting things up at 16 points apiece.
The lead changed a couple of times early in the second quarter, but Louisiana’s offense put together another run that was sparked by a three-ball from Jomyra Mathis and ended with a solid jumper from Ty’reona Doucet to take a 26-20 lead as both teams headed into the locker room.
The second half started with an early back-and-forth, but the Cajuns started to pull away, getting up by 13 with 6:36 left after a jumper from Mathis. The Warhawks did fight back though with an 8-0 run to get the lead down to seven points, but that was as close as they would getting headed into the fourth quarter.
UL Monroe started to get close to pulling off the rally, but after the media timeout in the fourth quarter, it was all Ragin Cajuns as they went on a 12-0 run to seal the victory and get up by 20 points. The Warhawks didn’t go down without a fight though as they finished with an 8-1 run as time expired.
BIG NUMBER: 7
The Ragin’ Cajuns have looked great all season long against opponents from the state of Louisiana and with the victory on Saturday, the Cajuns have improved to 7-0 on the year.
Player of the Game: Kim Burton
Burton may have had the best game of her career on Saturday with the junior going 9-for-11 from the field and racking up a career-high 19 points and five boards. The Coushatta native has started to catch fire late in the season after some underwhelming performances against Georgia Southern and Troy earlier in February.
