The Louisiana Ragin Cajuns headed into this weekend’s matchup against Texas State needing to close the gap between themselves and the Bobcats and took a step towards doing just that on Friday night with a 62-60 win in San Marcos.
How It Happened:
The contest began with Theo Akwuba giving the Cajuns the lead with an early dunk followed up by a three-pointer from Cedric Russell to take an early 5-1 lead. Texas State was able to keep it close for much of the first half, but Louisiana put together a 9-4 run midway through the first half to take a 19-11 lead with 6:56 left until halftime. The Cajuns were able to keep a late push at bay to take a seven-point lead into the break after a late three-pointer from Devin Butts.
Texas State opened up the second half strong with a 7-0 run to tie things within the first minute. Louisiana responded with a 6-0 run right after but a pair of jumpers by Mason Harrell gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game with 15:20 left in regulation.
The Cajuns started to pull away late, going up by seven after a layup from Cedric Russell with 4:19 left in regulation and that was enough to hold off a late rally.
Big Number: 33
The Cajuns were just the better team from three-point range, shooting for 33 percent from beyond the arc. This compared to Texas State’s paltry 19 percent.
Player of the Game: Cedric Russell
The senior continues to have a great season in the Vermilion and White, racking up 21 points and five rebounds.
