After taking game one Friday night and losing game two on Saturday at Russo Park, Louisiana looked to win their first Sun Belt series of the season. The Cajuns were able to grab the 6-3 win on Sunday to improve to 11-12 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

South Alabama broke the ice with a 2-0 lead at the top of the first. Erick Orbeta, the Jags lead-off hitter had a double down the right field line. Two batters later, Miles Simington sent the ball over the right field wall to bring him and Orbeta home.

The Cajuns,at the bottom of the inning tied up the game. Tyler Robertson had a double down left center, then Carson Roccaforte homered over the right center before Will Veillon got out to end the inning.

The bats got really silent for the next three innings for both teams. South Alabama only managed to muster up one hit at the top of the second and fourth.

Louisiana on the other hand, didn’t record a hit until the bottom of the fourth. Veillon broke the streak with a single and stole second after Heath Hood’s pop fly was caught for the second out. Connor Kimple singled deep down center field which brought in Veillon to give the Cajuns the one run advantage.

At the bottom of the fifth Bobby Lada singled to left center, then stole second base, but Robertson would be called for a ground out on a controversial call by the umpire to end the inning.

The bottom of the sixth inning, Louisiana couldn’t capitalize with bases loaded as Julian Brock’s pop fly was caught to for the third out.

South Alabama tied the game at three at the top of the seventh. Simington doubled down the third base line, which advanced Will Turner to third, who was hit by a pitch and brought home Orbeta, who was walked earlier.

Louisiana took back the lead at the at the bottom of the inning after Kyle DeBarge had the sacrifice ground out to advance Robertson to second and bring home Lada. Veillon further pushed their lead with a singled to second base, the hit allowed Roccaforte and Robertson to score and give the Cajuns the 6-3 lead.

Jake Hammond and Chipper Menard were able to hold off the Jaguars the last couple of innings to secure the 6-3 win to take their first Sun Belt series of the 2022 season and improve to 11-12.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Will Veillon

Veillon was crucial for the Cajuns on Sunday as he record two hits on three at-bats, had two RBI’s and had a run of his own.

BIG NUMBER: 27

What the Louisiana pitching missed in strikeouts, they made up for in putout’s as the Cajuns had 27 total in the 6-3 win.

UP NEXT: Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (11-12) will pack up their bags to head to Hammond on Tuesday, March 29th to play Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch will be at 6:00 p.m.
