This wasn’t exactly what the fans had in mind on Sunday afternoon when they sat down to watch the New Orleans Saints take on the New York Giants after last year’s shootout in the Superdome. The Saints had won the turnover battle but didn’t have much to show for it as they fell to 0-2 after a loss to the Giants by the score of 16-13.
After neither team was able to score in the first quarter, the Giants got the special teams involved and blocked a field goal attempt from Will Lutz and Janoris Jenkins took it to the house to take 7-0 lead. Will Lutz got a chance to redeem himself late in the first half with a 39-yarder going through the uprights to cut away at the lead before heading into the locker room.
The lack of offensive scoring continued in the second half when Josh Brown nailed a 48-yarder to make it 10-3.
The Saints got the only offensive touchdown on the day with Drew Brees connecting with Willie Snead from 17 yards out to tie things up at 10 early in the fourth quarter. But the Giants came right back with Brown nailing a chipshot of a field goal to take a 13-10 lead.
The Saints ate up clock late and settled for another field goal from Lutz, this time from 45 yards out to tie things up. But much like last week’s game against the Raiders, a late penalty became the catalyst for another Saints loss as it set up Brown kicking his third field goal of the day as time expired to come away with the win.
The Saints will try to avoid going 0-3 against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night September 26th with kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
