There are sure to be several LSU players listed among the top prospects in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft, which starts on Sunday.
Rounds 1-2 of the draft will begin at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday from Fort Worth, TX as ESPN and the MLB Network will provide television coverage.
Rounds 3-10 will be held Monday afternoon, and the draft will conclude Tuesday with Rounds 11-20 as both days will begin at 1 p.m. CT. All rounds of the MLB Draft may be viewed on MLB.com.
LSU All-American third baseman Tommy White, the nation’s leader in RBI during the national title run, is the No. 20 overall draft prospect for 2024 by MLB.com.
Other LSU players among the Top 250 MLB Draft prospects are right-handed pitcher Luke Holman at 45, left-handed pitcher Gage Jump at 62, right-handed pitcher Thatcher Hurd at 114 (currently in the transfer portal), first baseman Jared Jones at 1,19 and left-handed pitcher Griffin Herring coming in at 157.
LSU made MLB Draft history last summer when right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes and centerfielder Dylan Crews became the first players from the same team to be selected first and second overall in the same draft. Skenes was selected first by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Crews was selected with the second pick by the Washington Nationals. Skenes has been named the starter for the National League All-Star team in the Midsummer Classic this Tuesday night at Globe Life Field, while Crews is having a great run in Triple-A.
LSU also tied the Southeastern Conference record for most drafted players in a single season in 2023 when 13 Tigers joined an MLB organization.
LSU players have been selected in the MLB Draft on 232 occasions since 1984, an average of nearly six players per season. The Tigers have produced 20 first-round selections in the past 35 seasons.
If LSU has a player chosen in the opening round on Sunday, it will be the third straight season the Tigers have produced a first-round pick. Skenes, Crews, and right-handed pitcher Ty Floyd (Cincinnati Reds) were first-round selections in 2023, and third baseman Jacob Berry was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2022 Draft by the Miami Marlins.
