You might think that a horse in the Kentucky Derby having a connection to Louisiana is a pretty cool thing. Well, what do you think about 6 of the 20 horses running this year being connected to Louisiana in one way or another? The owner of the Saints and Pelicans, Tom Benson, has 2 of his horses among the group of 20. Benson’s horses, Mo Tom and Toms Ready, will push to try and take home the Derby crown for the Louisiana crowd. Also, winner of the Louisiana Derby GunRunner will try and become just the 3rd horse to win the Louisiana and Kentucky Derbies. Gun Runner is going off at 10-1 odds and may not be a bad choice if you want to pull for a Louisiana horse. Lastly, Exagorrator will make a run at the Derby. Exagorrator is trained and ridden by Keith and Kent Desormeaux respectively. The Desormeaux brothers are from Maurice, LA and Kent is making his first appearance in the Kentucky Derby. What has been dubbed ‘Louisiana Derby North’, the Kentucky Derby sure brings a lot of intrigue to all of us down here in good ole Louisiana.
