Week three of high school football is now in the books and there’s a lot that we learned about some of your favorite teams in the Acadiana area. Here’s my thoughts on the week that was.
Acadiana High’s Offense Isn’t High Scoring, But Still Solid
I’ve mentioned in the past about point differentials and what that says about a team. You look at Acadiana High and all three of their ballgames have been incredibly close. Of course, you can talk about the Hail Mary last week against Ruston and point to that as a clear example. This offense isn’t going to set the scoreboard ablaze, but they’ll be setting the tone against opponents with their veer offense and wear defenses down with it.
Because of that, district play could be extremely fun especially when the Rams face off against a high-octane Barbe offense. It’s still a little early to crown a program as a state champion so I’ll say that Acadiana High makes a fairly deep run in the postseason this year.
Old School Better Than New School
Much like the Acadiana-Carencro game, Notre Dame-Teurlings was a marquee matchup that everyone was looking forward to on Friday night. I coined it as a battle of old-school versus new school with Lewis Cook and his Pios facing off against Dane Charpentier in his second season as the head coach Teurlings. That battle lived up to the hype and tonight old-school proved that they were better in a close ballgame.
It’s about what you’d expect from two of the top teams in the Acadiana area and Lewis Cook’s team seems poised to make another trip to the Dome.
St. Martinville Becoming the Big Surprise of the Acadiana Area
This isn’t throwing shade or anything of the sort towards St. Martinville. This was a team that got bounced back early in playoffs last season and finished the season at 6-5. Vincent Derouen and his coaching staff have built off of that and the Tigers are standing at 3-0 with a 28-21 win over a solid Comeaux team being a big highlight for this team.
The next couple of weeks will be a big test with a pair of home games against the Northside Vikings and Woodlawn-Baton Rouge. Even if they split the next two games before district play, St. Martinville has shown that they could make a deep run in the postseason.
St. Thomas More Is the Real Deal
Another marquee matchup in the Acadiana, at least on paper was St. Thomas More taking on Plaquemine. Both teams headed into week three in the top ten according to the LSWA and the Cougars looked dominant in a 59-28 win inside the friendly confines.
I’ve already mentioned how much I like the team’s setup on both sides of the ball, but I really think that they have a solid chance to get a win over Catholic High Baton Rouge. Might be something in the water, but I’m starting to see that this may be the best team Jim Hightower has had in quite some time.
