The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team was defeated by Louisiana Tech 7-2 on Wednesday night at Russo Park. The win marked the end of the 16-game winning streak for the Cajuns.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Louisiana sent left-hander Blake Marshall to the mound to begin the game. He allowed two hits in the first inning, but was able to work around them to put up a zero.

The Bulldogs countered with righty Grant Hubka. Hubka dealt with command issues in the first, walking three batters. However, he also worked his way out of trouble to keep the game scoreless after one.

After both teams failed to score in the second, Louisiana Tech got things going in the third. Facing reliever Matthew Holzhammer, the Bulldogs strung together several hits to put themselves up 2-0. At that point, the Cajuns went to David Christie. Christie allowed one of Holzhammer’s runners to score, but limited the damage and got out of the inning at 3-0.

Kyle Debarge answered immediately in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1. That was all the Cajuns got, however, and the Bulldogs would answer. They got two more in the bottom half, including one on an RBI double by Cole McConnell. That made it 5-1.

Louisiana again chipped into the lead with an RBI triple from John Taylor in the bottom of the fourth. However, that is all they got. The Bulldogs got that run back plus one more with a two-run burst in the top of the sixth, which made the game 7-2.

After that point, neither team was able to put together any offense. The Bulldogs held on for the 7-2 win.

BIG NUMBER: 15

The Bulldogs mashed 15 hits in this game. The Cajuns pitching just struggled to miss bats throughout, and the Louisiana Tech offense capitalized.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Cole McConnell

McConnell was a tough out in this one, as he went 4-4 in this one. He also added a walk and an RBI in the Bulldogs’ victory.

UP NEXT: Louisiana will stay home to host Marshall for a three game Sun Belt series beginning Friday, April 12th at 6:00 at Russo Park.
