
The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team defeated the Kansas State Wildcats 3-2 in eleven innings. on Wednesday night inside M.L. Tigue Moore Field at Russo Park. The win came on a walk-off home run, and is the seventh straight victory for the Cajuns.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Louisiana started with left-hander Tyler Papenbrock on the mound. He allowed a baserunner in the first, but that runner was erased when Jose Torres threw him out attempting to steal.
Matt Flores got the start for Kansas State. He was not as successful in the first. He gave up a couple of hits and a sacrifice fly, as Rigoberto Hernandez earned an RBI and gave Louisiana a 1-0 lead.
Papenbrock would settle in and cruise through the early frames for the Cajuns. We worked scoreless through the fifth inning, allowing no runs in an impressive outing.
This game would be 1-0 until the sixth. In that frame, Kansas State got on the board with a single run. Grant Gallagher delivered the RBI single to tie things at one.
Louisiana would score in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error. That gave them a 2-1 lead, and they tried to close it down in the ninth. However, Gallagher struck again, this time hitting a solo shot to tie the game.
The game would go to extras. In the bottom half of the eleventh, Drew Markle was the hero. He launched a walk-off home run into the left field pine trees, giving Louisiana a 3-2 win.
BIG NUMBER: 8
Louisiana only had eight base hits in this two-game midweek series against Kansas State. Despite that, they won both games.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Drew Markle
Markle was excellent defensively in this game. Then, he delivered the walk off home run to give Louisiana their seventh consecutive victory.
UP NEXT: Louisiana will remain at home to begin a three-game weekend series against UC San Diego. Game one on Friday night is scheduled for a 6:00 PM first pitch.
