Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun golfer Malan Potgieter competed at the NCAA DI Men’s National Championship in Carlsbad, California over the weekend.
After a strong showing over the first two days, Potgieter struggled on Sunday and fell just one shot short of making the cut for Monday’s final round.
For the event, Potgieter shot -1 overall after rounds of 68, 68, and 79. He finished tied for 32nd among individuals.
The Ragin’ Cajuns standout, who earned his way to the event as an individual despite the team not making it, made it through Regionals without ever making a bogey. He continued that incredible stretch through the first two rounds of the Championship, sitting -8 and just two off the lead entering Sunday.
That run continued early on Sunday, as Potgieter birdied the first and made par at the second, getting to -9 for the tournament and extending his streak to 93 consecutive holes without a bogey. He was the only player in the field without one through Regionals.
Unfortunately for Potgieter, he dropped a shot for the first time in 93 holes on his third hole of the day. From there, things spiraled on him. He played his final 15 holes at eight over, making double bogeys on his 17th and 18th holes of the day. Those dropped shots at the end put Malan just on the outside of playing on Monday in the final round.
Potgieter wraps his Cajuns’ career as one of the most decorated players in the history of the program. This season, he broke the school scoring record, and became the first-ever back-to-back winner of the Louisiana Classics, the tournament that Ragin’ Cajuns Golf hosts every year.
