The Houston Astros defeated the New York Mets 6-3 on Sunday afternoon inside Citi Field in Queens, New York. With the win, Houston won series over both the Yankees and Mets during their New York roadtrip.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mets (61-76) went with Zac Thornton on the mound. He was greeted rudely by Jeremy Pena, who hit a leadoff home run to start the game and give Houston a 1-0 lead.
The Astros (69-68) started Ethan Pecko, making his third big league start. Pecko gave up back-to-back home runs to start the bottom of the first to Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, allowing the Mets to take a 2-1 lead after one.
Houston quickly tied things up with a run in the top of the second. Peña came through again, this time with an RBI single to make it 2-2.
A couple of walks and an error contributed to the Mets taking the lead again in the bottom of the fifth. The 3-2 lead was short-lived, however. The Astros got two in the top of the sixth on a Lamonte Wade Jr two-run shot. That made it 4-3 Astros.
Pecko was able to settle in for Houston and they kept that 4-3 lead into the late stages. The Astros would add a pair of insurance runs to make it 6-3.
Then, the bullpen took care of business. Josh Hader capped the win by staying perfect in save opportunities this season.
BIG NUMBER: 21
With another save, Hader is now a perfect 21-21 this season in closing out games. He continues to be a weapon in the bullpen with an ERA that sits at a minuscule 0.74.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Lamonte Wade Jr
Wade was clutch in this game, hitting a go-ahead two run home run that ultimately gave the Astros a lead they wouldn’t give up. For the day, he was 1-2 after entering as a pinch hitter.
