The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball team defeated the UL Monroe Warhawks 80-60 on Saturday afternoon inside the Cajundome. The Cajuns celebrated their 10 seniors after the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both teams began the game with some offensive pace. For ULM, it was their leading scorer Meloney Thames who got things going with a few tough jumpers. However, Erica Lafayette had things rolling for the Cajuns as well. Eventually, Louisiana stretched out their lead to 22-14 after one period.
The offenses continued to stay hot early on the second, but Louisiana’s was hotter. Another quick run gave them a 30-18 lead and forced a ULM timeout. The offense only kept clicking and the lead grew. Lafayette had 15 by the halftime break, and the Cajuns shot a blistering 81% in the second quarter. All of that had the advantage at 48-27 for the Cajuns at the half.
The Warhawks started to make a run in the third quarter thanks to Thames. A 13-4 stretch with a couple of triples cut the lead down to 13 at 52-40. Their run continued and they got it all the way to 52-45 before the Cajuns stretched it back out with some sharp shooting. By the end of the third, the Cajuns lead was 63-48.
The Cajuns handled the fourth quarter after starting on a quick run to put the game out of reach. They were helped by Skylah Travis, who secured her second double double in the win.
BIG NUMBER: 81
Louisiana shot an incredible 81% from the field in the second quarter, which allowed them to build their lead. That efficiency made it difficult for the Warhawks to keep pace.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Skylah Travis
Skylah came off the bench and made an impact again. She had 11 points and 12 rebounds to help Louisiana secure the win in this in-state battle.
UP NEXT: Louisiana will be on the road in San Marcos to face Texas State on Wednesday, February 19th at 5:00 PM.
