The Houston Astros have been on fire in the month of May. While they are currently atop the AL West standings with no real competition in sight, they keep running into injury issues.
Jose Altuve has been out since May 10th with a hamstring, George Springer exited Friday night’s game with a similar injury and now Aledmys Diaz is headed to the IL with the exact same injury.
Diaz. who had been filling in for Altuve since his injury, exited Sunday’s game in the first inning after getting across home plate off of a Carlos Correa single. He suffered a grade one strain of his hamstring on May 17th against the Red Sox and according to the second baseman, it’s the same kind of pain.
“I tried to push a little bit more on that play.” Aledmys said after the 4-1 loss to Boston, “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”
This injury puts them in a precarious position with not a lot of depth in their farm systems and the Astros are hoping that Altuve’s rehab assignment with the Round Rock Express goes well. If it’s a success, the 2017 AL MVP will be back with the team for Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
