A pair of former Calcasieu Parish stars turned LSU standouts were selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Tigers outfielder Jake Brown was selected No. 65 overall Saturday by the Seattle Mariners in the second round of the 2026 MLB Draft.
Brown was selected in the 16th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers as a senior at Sulphur High School, but he chose to enroll at LSU and helped lead the Tigers to the 2025 College World Series title.
The 6-foot-2, 206-pound Brown has a .304 career batting average in three seasons at LSU with 20 doubles, two triples, 28 homers, 110 RBI, and 111 runs. Brown batted a team-high .385 in the 2025 College World Series with four RBI and two runs scored.
He hit .309 in the 2026 season with seven doubles, 16 homers, 49 RBI and 43 runs despite missing LSU’s final 17 games due to a hand injury. He was ranked fifth in the SEC in homers, fifth in RBI, and ninth in total bases at the time of his injury.
At Sulphur High, Brown was voted as the 2023 Gatorade Louisiana Baseball Player of the Year. He posted a 10-2 record on the mound for Sulphur High with a 1.71 ERA, surrendering just 39 hits in 73.2 innings pitched while striking out 118 batters.
He also batted .336 in 2023 for the Toros with seven home runs, 26 RBI and 20 stolen bases. Brown helped lead Sulphur to a 34-5 record and the Division I Non-Select semifinals.
LSU relief pitcher Gavin Guidry, meanwhile, was selected by the New York Mets with the 480th pick in the draft.
The former Barbe High Buccaneer made an immediate impact for Jay Johnson’s team as a freshman in 2023. He would make 23 appearances, posting a 3-0 record with a 3.77 ERA and three saves in 28.2 innings. Guidry recorded 42 strikeouts and 12 walks, limited opponents to a .209 cumulative batting average, and helped LSU win the national championship.
He followed that up with a strong 2024 as he made 22 relief appearances on the year, posting a 2-0 mark and a 2.59 ERA in 24.1 innings with 18 walks and 36 strikeouts. A back injury sidelined him for the 2025 season.
Guidry would return this past season and go 5-3 overall, 43.2 innings pitched, and 59 strikeouts.
Before LSU, Guidry was a star shortstop-pitcher for legendary Buccaneers head coach Glenn Cecchini.
He was the 2022 Gatorade Louisiana High School Player of the Year after he blasted four home runs and posted a .422 batting average with five homers and 25 RBI, leading the Bucs to a 36-4 record and a berth in the Class 5A quarterfinals. He also compiled an 8-0 record on the mound with a 0.16 ERA and 83 strikeouts and 11 walks in 45 innings.
