The Houston Astros have announced that as of now, 63 players will be taking part in their Spring Training in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Those 63 players include the 40-man roster as well as 23 non-roster invitees who will also get the chance to showcase their abilities to the Major League staff.
During the off-season, the Astros made pretty significant changes to their roster. The headlining move was trading outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. In return, they received infielders Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith, as well as pitcher Hayden Wesneski. All three of those players will be apart of the Spring Training roster.
Another big change was that to this point, free agent Alex Bregman has not been resigned. As of now, Bregman remains a free agent. However, Paredes is likely to fill the third base spot unless Bregman returns in what would be a surprising move at this point.
In addition to plenty of returning Astros’ stars, we may get a look at the next crop of players for Houston this year. Six of the organization’s top 10 prospects will be invited, including Smith (#1), Jacob Melton (#2), and Brice Matthews (#4). While it remains to be seen how many prospects can make the big-league club, Spring Training may be our first glimpse at a big part of the Astros’ future.
Pitchers and catchers will begin their spring sessions on February 13th. That will be followed by the whole team getting going with their first workout on February 18th.
The Astros open the regular season inside Minute Maid Park on Thursday, March 27th at a newly announced 3:10 PM. You can listen to Astros baseball all season long on ESPN 103.7 Lafayette 104.1 Lake Charles.
