The Houston Astros defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-5 on Tuesday night in Coors Field. The win begins a three-game series between these two teams that participate in opposite leagues.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Rockies (19-66) went with talented right-handed Chase Dollander on the mound. He got off to a quick start, retiring the side in order.
The Astros (51-34) countered with lefty Colton Gordon. He was greeted by Hunter Goodman, who gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead on a solo shot with one out in the first.
Houston did not take long to answer, as they did so in the top of the second. Christian Walker delivered an RBI single to tie the game at one.
Houston would again strike in the third, this time to take the lead. Jake Meyers beat out a would-be double play ball, earning himself an RBI that gave the Astros a 2-1 lead. That set the stage for a big inning, as Victor Caratini delivered a grand slam later on to open things up and make it 6-1.
The Rockies would chip away at the lead, grabbing a single run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. The outing only lasted four and two-thirds for Gordon, giving up those four runs but leaving with a 6-4 lead.
As has been commonplace this season, the Houston bullpen handled their business. They worked the final four and a third, with only Josh Hader allowing a single run in the ninth. He still earned the save, with Bryan Abreu and Bryan King each getting holds. The Astros held on to win 6-5.
BIG NUMBER: 2
The Rockies made two more errors in this game, giving them the most in the Major Leagues this season.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Victor Caratini
Caratini went 2-4 with a homer, that being the big grand slam. As it turned out, the Astros needed each of those runs to hold on for the narrow victory.
