Not even Steven Spielberg could write up how game five of the World Series would go down on Sunday night. Chaos reigned supreme in Minute Maid Park with more false finishes than a match at Wrestlemania, but the Astros wound up getting the series lead right back in extra innings.
After the first inning, it seemed like the Dodgers had all the momentum with a two-run single from Logan Forsythe followed by Enrique Hernandez getting to home plate after a throwing error from Yuli Gurriel put the Astros down 3-0 early.
The Dodgers increased their lead in the fourth after an RBI single to left field. However, the Astros responded in a big way with an RBI double from Correa followed up by a three-run blast from Gurriel to left field to even things up.
However, Cody Bellinger had a rebuttal for the Astros first baseman’s big play with a three-run shot of his own in the top of the fifth. The ballgame got even stranger in the bottom half of the inning with Jose Altuve tying things up with a monster shot out to center field to tie things up yet again.
Bellinger wasn’t done though as he got Los Angeles back out in front with an RBI triple to left field to make it 8-7 in the seventh. The Astros didn’t let up though with a pair of homers from George Springer and Carlos Correa along with an RBI double from Altuve made it 11-8 in quick fashion.
Brian McCann wound up making it 12-9 headed into the final frame with a blast out to right field. The game wasn’t over just yet as Yasiel Puig’s one-handed homer cut the lead down to one run. Chris Taylor tied things up later in the inning with an RBI single out to center field.
The wheels came off for the Dodgers in the bottom of the 10th with Kenley Jansen hitting Brian McCann in the arm and walking George Springer. That brought Alex Bregman up to the plate. The former LSU Tigers got his World Series moment with a bloop single into left field to send Derek Fisher home to give the Astros a 13-12 win, over five hours after the game started.
Game six will return to Los Angeles with first pitch set for 7:20 pm. Justin Verlander and Yu Darvish will face off against each other on Tuesday October 31st.
